Haiti, two years into recovery
Thursday, January 12th it is two years ago that a devastating earthquake hit Haiti. The images shocked the world. Two years later many buildings and homes still lie in ruin, and more than half a million men, women and children continue to live in dilapidated and unsafe shelter. This reality is a constant and painful reminder that reconstruction work in Haiti is far from over. But progress has been made! Shortly after the earthquake, Habitat for Humanity set an aggressive goal of serving 50,000 families in Haiti over five years. Thanks to donors, supporters and volunteers, Habitat has already served more than 40,000 families, with permanent houses, transitional and upgradable shelters, damage assessments, repaired and rehabilitated homes, emergency shelter kits, training, and job opportunities. That’s more than 200,000 individuals whose lives have been made more secure and more stable through the work Habitat has carried out. And we will carry on. While our earthquake recovery program has focused largely on temporary housing solutions, our primary focus over the next three years will shift to partnering with Haitian families to provide permanent housing.
Whirlpool's employee challenge
Globally, Whirlpool Corporation has supported Habitat since 1999. Whirlpool EMEA’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity began in 2004, with product donation and volunteer participation in builds. In that time, more than 700 employees have been sponsored by Whirlpool to participate in Habitat builds. In 2011, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Whirlpool Corporation, Whirlpool EMEA decided to make its support for Habitat’s activities even more interesting and exciting by setting its 12,000 EMEA employees a big challenge.
