India is considered one of the world economy’s driving forces. Nevertheless, the wealth which arises from that economic growth is not divided up proportionally. The majority of the population lives in dire poverty. Housing of low-income families differs tremendously per region in India. A large part of the population living in rural areas lives in ‘katcha’, houses made of mud, grass or straw. In the urbanized areas a lot of families live in overcrowded slums, along canals, in garages, and on train platforms. The increasing urbanization, discrimination based on the caste system and the possibility of eviction and expropriation play a part in the housing problem.
